National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) – observed every October - was created as a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online.

NCSAM 2018 also marked the 9th anniversary of the STOP. THINK. CONNECT.™ campaign.


Cybersecurity Classroom Outreach by UITS Office of Information Security. 

Students had the opportunity to watch a Cybersecurity Awareness video in one of their classes during the month of October.  Their professors shared a short video covering key topics to make them more aware of staying safe online.

Week 1: Oct 1st - 5th Make Your Home a Haven for Online Safety

David Owing

October 3rd: Records Management & Destruction - Held a Lunch and Learn in the Schwob Library, given by David Owing

David Owings serves as Head of Archives for Columbus State University. He also serves as library development coordinator, records management coordinator, and as editor for the library newsletter Simon Says. In addition to his duties at CSU, David is actively engaged in the public history profession. He currently serves on the executive board of the Georgia Association of Historians as well as the editorial board for Muscogiana: Journal of the Muscogee Genealogical Society. He is a member of several roundtables of the Society of American Archivists including, Archives Management, College and University Archives, and Museum Archives.  


Eric Litz

October 4th: Cyber 2018 - Lecture Series, The speaker was Eric Litz- Center for Commerce & Technology(CCT) Auditorium 11:00 AM

Eric is the Chief Technology Officer for Delta Data Software. His role is focused on overseeing development, quality assurance, operations and supporting the applications implemented at client sites.

Prior to joining the Delta Data Team, he spent over 15 years developing and leading teams to deliver financial, marketing, and business intelligence applications, while working for the world's largest third party credit processor and several small companies focused on delivering precision measurement equipment for the tire and battery industries.

October 5th: Cybersecurity Virtual Career Fair, Michael Barker, Cybersecurity Director for the TSYS Center of Cybersecurity , Center for Commerce & Technology(CCT)125 Time - 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Virtual Career Fair enabled students and employers to network in an easy-to-use virtual environment using a robust chat function for instant one on one communication with employers. 


October 6th: Michael Barker, Cybersecurity Director for the TSYS Center of Cybersecurity, Center for Commerce & Technology(CCT)125 - Provided Community Outreach

Michael Barker is the Director of the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity and a former Atlanta technology expert and state-licensed private detective specializing in digital forensics. Mr. Barker is a recognized industry leader in cyber security, information security and digital forensics. UITS assisted in the Community Shredding Campaign.

Week 2: Oct 8th - 12th Millions of Rewarding Jobs: Educating for a Career in Cybersecurity

October11th: ISSA Columbus Chapter Meeting & Student Networking, Center for Commerce & Technology(CCT125) 4:00 - 6:00 PM

CSU was going to host the Columbus ISSA Chapter meeting.  Students were welcomed to attend to network with local Cybersecurity professionals.


October 12th: ISACA/TAG Cybersecurity Event, Columbus Country Club, 10:00AM - 4:00 PM,

Technology Association of Georgia, Columbus State University and ISACA Atlanta provided a day of cybersecurity speakers, lunch, and a tabletop exercise

Keynote Speaker - Kevin Gowen, Chief Information Security Officer, Synovus.



Chief Information Security Officer in February 2015. He joined Synovus in 1995 from IBM Corporation where he served in various engineering and management positions. He began his career with Synovus in the Information Technology area as Vice President of Network Services and Support. He served in various leadership roles in Information Technology including Director of Technology. Gowen was named Senior Director of Procurement in 2008 with responsibilities for procurement, contracting, and vendor management. He was named a Group Executive in 2011 and his responsibilities were expanded to include serving as Chief Procurement Officer and overseeing Synovus' Corporate Real Estate group.

October 23rd: Col. Richard R. Hallock Lecture Series - MG (ret) Patrica Frost was at the
CSU Cunningham Center Blanchard Hall A, 7:30 P.M.

Major General (ret) Patricia A. Frost selected in 2016 as the first Director of Cyber, Electronic Warfare and Information Operations for the Department of the Army, will present "From the trenches to the desktop—Warfare in the 21st Century" as part of Columbus State University's Hallock Lecture Series. Convocation credit is available.
